Factors like your environment and ability to handle situations triggering dependency are just as important as genetics. These are things that we can remain mindful of as we continue to develop an understanding of alcoholism on a personal basis. It\u2019s estimated that alcoholism is hereditary in about 45% to 65% of alcoholism cases.<\/p>\n<div style='text-align:center'><\/div>\n<p>Alcohol use disorder (AUD) can have a hereditary component, but not everyone living with AUD has a family history of AUD. &#8220;These genes are for risk, not for destiny,&#8221; stressed Dr. Enoch Gordis, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. He added that the research could help in identifying youngsters at risk of becoming alcoholics and could <a href=\"https:\/\/ecosoberhouse.com\/\">https:\/\/ecosoberhouse.com\/<\/a> lead to early prevention efforts. Hugo Bellen, a geneticist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, said the study &#8220;lays the foundation  for a genetic approach to dissecting the acute, and possibly the chronic, effects&#8221; of alcohol in people. Many over-the-counter and prescription medications can have adverse health consequences  whenmixed with alcohol.<\/p>\n<h2>The Genetics of Alcohol Use Disorder<\/h2>\n<p>The environment in which people live and work heavily affects their attitudes and drinking behaviors. Having a close family relative, such as a parent, can account for up to 60% of your risk of developing AUD. That <a href=\"https:\/\/ecosoberhouse.com\/article\/genetics-of-alcoholism-is-alcohol-abuse-hereditary\/\">is alcoholism hereditary<\/a> doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ll absolutely develop AUD if you have a family member living with the condition. You may have a higher genetic predisposition, but the underlying causes of AUD are multifaceted and complex.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the GCTA estimate of SNP heritability is consistent with the total genetic heritability, it is implicated that those genetics variants have a causal effect on the observed phenotype (Yang et al., 2011).<\/li>\n<li>A review of studies from 2020, which looked at a genome-wide analysis of more than 435,000 people, found 29 different genetic variants that increased the risk of problematic drinking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like many other complex traits, alcoholism appears to be clinically and etiologicaly hetrogenous[13]. This implies that there might be several steps and intermediate conditions in the development of AUD. Information about the underlying genetic factors that influence risk to AUD can be derived from multiple levels of AUD including amounts of drinks (Alcohol consumption), severity and symptoms of alcohol abuse and dependence. Commonly, genome wide association studies (GWAS) of alcoholism have focused on phenotypes based on the Diagnostic &amp; Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)[14]. In the 4th edition of the DSM (DSM-IV), alcohol dependence (AD) and abuse were considered as mutually exclusive diagnoses that together made up AUDs. DSM-V[14, 15] on the other hand consolidated AD and abuse as a single disorder as AUD[15],[16].<\/p>\n<h2>What health problems are associated with the alcohol flush reaction?<\/h2>\n<p>In some people, the initial reaction may feel like an increase in energy. But as you continue to drink, you become drowsy and have less control over your actions. Alcohol use disorder can include periods of being drunk (alcohol intoxication) and symptoms of withdrawal. Your socioeconomic status can directly affect your mental and physical well-being. If you live in a situation of poverty, for example, or in an area with limited resources, you may be less likely to have access to quality foods, community services, or adequate healthcare.
